Occlusion & Case Planning for Everyday Practice

Communication - Case Planning - Occlusion

Occlusion. It can be one of the driest & most confusing of subjects. It is however one of the most, if not THE most critical aspect of diagnosis and treatment planning when it comes to the longevity of the restorative dentistry that we provide for our patients.

THIS program has been described as THE program that NEEDS to be in between the slides of every OTHER program on treatment planning. NO glossing over the details. You won’t just hear that something needs to be done. You will understand why and how it needs to be applied to help make your restorations last-or understand why they failed.

During this interactive lecture, Dr. Michael Melkers will guide an exploration and discussion of where we have been as a profession, where we are in our understanding and what mysteries still need to be solved.

Learning Objectives

1 – Upon completion, the participant shall be able to appreciate purpose vs process treatment planning as it applies to outcome based treatment planning

2 – The participant will have a thorough understanding of the benefits of patient centered, doctor facilitated approach to case planning and acceptance.

3-Learn when, why & how phasing treatment can be done safely.

4-Learn to recognize critical parafunctional red flags and why they matter

5-Appreciate the balance between function, parafunction & aesthetics

6-Learn realistic management of destructive forces in restorative dentistry

I have gotten more hugs from patients than I ever expected. they are amazed at how much better they feel every day. Your class has given my patients the chance to experience how good they should feel every morning. I just wanted to let you know how much your class and teaching style has helped me and my practice.

Dr David Gadioli, Shelby Charter Township, MI
I came with four cases in my bag. With each of them I was stuck. I could not wait to show them. And after the course I was perfectly fine taking them back with me without even unpacking. And it is not because I suddenly know what I am doing now and confident in it. It's just because I have found the next logical step to take. Of course talking with Michael through it gave me even more directions and cleared possible obstacles on the way. It has bee few weeks after a course. How often do we attend courses that we forget about in a week? My practice has changed a lot. Starting with greeting the patient and continuing with getting new tools and communicating to the lab. It was the kind of course that changes your direction and makes it impossible to stay ignorant. I can not wait to see where it will lead me and I will try my best to share changes that I have made with others.

Alina Ruzanova, Tallinn, Estonia
Hi Michael, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for a fantastic 2 days in Sydney. What a wonderful course. You have really opened my eyes to a topic that I thought was daunting beyond me. Simplified and made practical to everyday dentistry, I can see myself looking at my patients and their teeth with fresh perspective on Monday. I hope you’re trip back to the US is smooth. Thanks again!

Charlotte Wotherspoon/Mayrand, (from the Hunter valley)
Thank you Mike. The lecture was easily the best CPD I've done this year.

Khachornwut Supasiti, Melton, VIC Australia
As somebody, unkown to me, said: ”successful people are very generous with their time and knowledge”. THANK YOU for being so very generous! And being very professional and non judgemental. Looks like you have made everybody comfortable and happy. It has been a great fun getting know you and others.

Dr. Maria McFarland, New Zealand
Dear Michael. Thanks for an excellent course last weekend in Aarhus. Everyone I have talked to agrees that you are a talented and lovely unpretentious speaker. And the professional content lived up to expectations and beyond. Nice to have you visiting and hope we meet again in the future. Sincerely, Søren

Søren
Mike is truly one of the most helpful, genuine, compassionate educators that I have ever known. Seriously I don’t know another person that wants to help their peers anymore than he does.

Dr. Matt McMasters, Athens, Alabama
I cannot think of anyone that has had a greater impact on me-clinically, professionally…for my patients. No one.

Dr. Paul Ferraioli, Mendham, NJ
Michael puts his heart into every course, and it always shows.

Dr Andrew Thorpe Mackay, Queensland, Australia
Three years ago, I didn't understand much about the anterior guidance/ anterior group function. After last week with you, I understand why we should aim to have canine guidance with an anterior cross over/ anterior group function. In fact, one of my patient debonded his 10 years old veneer on his upper left central last saturday, and he only contact at the 21 during lateral excursion. I wouldn't know how to help him manage his occlusal force if it wasn't for your explanation. The emphasis on efficiency of the use of leaf gauge, treatment planning, bimanual jaw manipulation really make these technique more achievable in the daily dental practise. The lab made DAASA splint reduces all the time of NTI reline ( eventhough NTI reline is a skill too), allow time to be spent in the clinic learning most useful skills. Having said that the lab appliances is really comfortable, we make our own DAASA splint in house using the method Lincoln taught me before. I have been using the communication technique that I have learned from Lincoln and your course. During the current course, you have demonstrate a good way of including informed consent and mentioned the risk and complication in a non repelling way. All in all, thank you for your generosity and genuine passion in teaching.

The most anticipated Occlusion event of 2020 from an internationally acclaimed speaker

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should come to this event?

This course is for both young dentist (DF1, DCT and beyond) as well as established dentists. We actually encourage Prosthodontic specialist trainees and restorative specialist trainees (and also UK Restorative consultants) to come to this program to broaden their horizon and learn about important occlusal philosophies from someone who has a diverse background in Occlusion.

Dear Hospital trainees, if you have never made an anterior midstop appliance, perhaps you should come to this event to learn more and diversifying your knowledge of Occlusion. There is no point being stuck in a ‘hospital-mindset’…no offence! – Jaz Gulati of Prostrusive Dental Podcast

Dr Melker’s program is world-renowned and has so many practical gems for both for occlusion and for communication. After all, if you can do quadrant dentistry or partial/full mouth rehabilitations but do not know how to communicate effectively with correct phasing and pricing, there is little point.

As well as the learning objectives you will also learn about:

– Splint therapy including orthotic devices

– Facebows and articulators – and why you do not always need one. But if you do, how to maximise accuracy

– Joint positions (you will love his memorable explanation for this)

– Managing the worn dentition

– Force management in occlusion design

– Treatment phasing

– Simplifying complex cases

There will be LOTS of cases discussed. The aim is for you to walk away with a new-found enthusiasm for occlusion and more confidence in treating cases that you may consider out of your comfort zone in your personal educational journey.

If you are a ‘Spear Dentist’, ‘Dawson Dentist’, ‘Pankey’, ‘Kois’ or ‘Neuromuscular’ – you will gain from this 2 day program. Dr Melkers has been Visiting Faculty at both Spear Education and The Pankey Instititute.

…and if you do not have an Occlusal Philosophy yet – you will leave with one after this program.

Why is the price so reasonable for a 2-day full course with a leading international lecturer on a topic of Occlusion?

Occlusion courses are notoriously large investments, but they are the key to moving away from single tooth dentistry and enjoying yourself.

With the calibre of speaker that Michael Melker’s is, the aim is to deliver THE most engaging, helpful and inspiring Occlusion course in Europe and make it accessible to all young dentists.

I paid double for this 2-day program in 2018 and it paid for itself multiple times over – I wanted to help host an event at a phenomenal value on my favourite topic by the speaker who has inspired me the most – Jaz Gulati of Protrusive Dental Podcast, Occlusion enthusiast and host for Occlusion 2020

Is there a delegate rate for the Hotel?

At the time of launching the program, the prices on booking.com and various websites for the course dates are very reasonable including breakfast (well below £130).
It is advisable that you book your hotels well in advance as the hotel does get very busy. There are hotels on the main road walking distance from Sheraton Skyline.

I am coming from Europe and would like to make a trip out of this – any recommendations?

End of May the fantastic time to visit London. I would suggest to stay at the Sheraton Skyline hotel to start with (or a nearby hotel, there are LOADS!) and you can arrive and explore the week running up to the event or the week after if you wish – you can explore London and the surrounding areas and make a holiday out of it.

With the event being in Heathrow, it will improve accessibility to all those Dentists around Europe who wanted to have an opportunity to see Dr Michael Melkers speak, whether it’s for the first time off for the fifth time!

How many hours of verifiable CPD will I get?

The program will be 12 hours CPD/CE and you be issued your certificate at the event.

Is my ticket refundable?

Your ticket is non-refundable. However, we understand that sometimes it is not possible to attend an event due to unforeseen life circumstances. Therefore it is up to the delegate to sell his or her ticket to another delegate so that they may take their place. It is a requirement to inform organisers by email (seeitclearly@occlusion2020.com) 72 hours in advance so that the correct CPD certificate can be arranged.

When does the early bird offer end?

The mega early bird offer all end-users 2nd of January 2020 at 23.55 hours. Occlusion2020 is expected to be a sell-out event attracting Dentists all over Europe, UK and Ireland. Therefore it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.

How far is the hotel from Heathrow Airport?

The hotel was selected as it is very close to LHR (7 minutes drive) and offers great convenience, including to UK delegates. Please see the Google Map below to make your necessary travel arrangements.

Is there a car park space at the Venue?

There will be complimentary parking for all delegates. Please note it can get very busy sometimes as the hotel runs many events. Spaces are available on a first-come first-served basis for all delegates who are looking to park. In our experience, there is usually ample parking on site.

How can I buy a ticket?

Scroll up and click on ‘Buy Tickets’. We are using TicketTailor as our official ticketing partner. This way, we can accept all major credit and debit cards. If you would like to pay via Bank Transfer, please email seeitclearly@occlusion2020.com for advice.

Should I do any prior reading before coming to Occlusion2020?

This event will take you on a journey from the fundamentals to more complex in a very engaging manner. You can take notes at the venue, but we do not think there is much benefit of reading before-hand. Just come with an open mind and as an enthusiastic student. There will be note-pads and pens provided as well as drinking water to stay hydrated to get you through the fun, but intense days.

Can I bring my family or my spouse to the event?

Of course! Whilst the lecture will only accommodate you as a Delegate, your family is welcome to come and stay in the hotel and explore the the nearby areas – for children, there is a bowling alley nearby. The venue is not too far from Central London as direct trains via Heathrow Express are plentiful.

Are there any evening activities planned?

You are free to plan your own evening activities, but many people may wish to dine at the world famous Madhu’s restaurant. I would encourage booking in advance to dine here. The lamb chops are TO DIE for!

Stay tuned for any updates regarding evening activity.

Will Dr Melker’s be dressed as Jedi Mercury again?

I cannot confirm, nor deny any fancy dress! 😉
